Dolphin Watching Near Gibraltar — What to Expect

Maia Fair Team 2026-04-11 8 min read

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the most extraordinary stretches of water in the world — and one of the best places in Europe to see dolphins in the wild. Where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet in a passage just 14km wide, strong currents create an upwelling of nutrients that supports an exceptional concentration of marine life. Three species of dolphin live here year-round, along with Long-finned Pilot Whales and seasonal visitors including Sperm Whales, Fin Whales and, in summer, Orca.

From Berth 092, Puerto Banus, Gibraltar is approximately 80km to the west — a spectacular coastline passage through Sotogrande and along the foot of the Sierra Almenara mountains. An extended full-day or overnight charter from Puerto Banus takes you through some of the most dramatic and historically significant waters in the Mediterranean.

The Dolphins of the Strait

Seven species of cetacean have been recorded in the Strait of Gibraltar. The following four are resident year-round:

The Strait of Gibraltar is just 14km wide at its narrowest point — the closest point between Europe and Africa. The strong current flowing in from the Atlantic creates one of the most productive marine environments in the Mediterranean, supporting the extraordinary concentration of dolphins and whales that makes this passage so remarkable.

The Route from Puerto Banus to Gibraltar

The 80km passage west from Puerto Banus to Gibraltar takes Maia Fair through some of the most varied and beautiful coastline on the Costa del Sol:

Gibraltar from the Sea

The Rock of Gibraltar is one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in Europe. From the sea, the scale of it — 426 metres of near-vertical limestone rising from a narrow isthmus — is genuinely astonishing. The eastern face, scarred with ancient water catchment galleries and dotted with caves, is invisible from the town and only visible from the water. It is one of the great perspectives available on a Gibraltar yacht charter from Puerto Banus.

The Bay of Gibraltar itself is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world — at any moment, container ships, tankers, military vessels and private yachts share the water with resident dolphins. The contrast between the industrial scale of the commercial shipping and the intimacy of a dolphin encounter 50 metres from the bow is one of the genuinely memorable experiences available on an extended charter from Puerto Banus.

Gibraltar is 80km from Puerto Banus by sea. An extended full-day or overnight charter with Maia Fair covers the full coastal passage, with dolphin watching en route and Gibraltar from the sea as the destination. Overnight charters allow you to spend the night at anchor and return at dawn.
